The book of Esther tells the story of how Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai saved the Jewish people from the plot of the wicked Haman, who was advisor to the Persian King Xerxes, and who tried to have the Jews destroyed. Esther and Mordecai showed great initiative and courage. Esther was willing to put her own life at risk to save her people.
Even though the name of God is not mentioned in this book, His sovereign control of the lives of Esther and Mordecai, and subsequently the Jewish nation, is very evident throughout. It is clear that God is present and working to protect and deliver his chosen people.
The Jews today celebrate every year the deliverance of the Jews by Esther as they celebrate the Festival of Purim, the anniversary of the Jews’ victory over their enemies.
This devotional on Esther is dedicated to my four granddaughters in hope that they will want to grow up to be like Esther….a woman of character who did the right thing even though it was hard and she was scared. The sovereign control of God is in clear view throughout this intriguing story. Bible readings are taken/adapted from the New Living Translation.
