A major purpose of Mark in writing this Gospel was to stress the true humanity of the Son of God. He vividly describes the human reactions and emotions of Jesus. While John stressed the deity of Christ, Mark showed that Jesus was the human servant who had come to do His Father’s will. Matthew presented Jesus in the purple and gold of royalty while Mark portrayed Him in the brown and green of a lowly commoner.
Mark’s purpose was also a practical one. He wanted to prepare his readers for the persecution that lay ahead of them under the Emperor Nero. To do this, he shared much about Jesus’ suffering which would have encouraged them to persevere in the face of their suffering.
